“Anywhere but here”
Hank took his hand. “Why don’t we go for a drive. I haven’t shown you my car yet. I think you’ll like it.” Hank walked them down into the garage and removed the cover. There sat his 1975, cherry red, chevy impala. Hank unlocked the passenger door and said, “Get in.”
I got in as Hank started the car and we drove off. It was silent for minutes. Neither one of us really knowing what to say to one another. I couldn’t help but feel guilty for the way things turned on back in Pietro’s room, but I knew it wasn’t my fault. I just couldn’t help but shake the feeling however.
Hank found a scenic road and stuck to it. This wasn’t one of the more populated areas of New York, thankfully. “Are you alright?” Hank asked, trying not to be intrusive.
“I don’t want to trouble you with my family issues Hank.”
Hank looked at him seriously. “You aren’t troubling me with anything. Family issues are normal.”
“I’ve been raising her since she was nine and I’ve tried my best to be a good father figure for her. I’ve been nineteen as long as I could remember Hank. When she started to age as a young woman we had issues. She didn’t get her perod and when I took her to a doctor I was told she didn’t have a uterus. It had been surgically removed before I found her.
We never got into fights really. We were close, closer than close. We didn’t lie to each other ever, and now its like she’s changed. She means everything to me. Family is very important to me Hank and I just wish things weren’t the way they were right now.”
It was silent for a minute.
“I’m sorry Hank. I’m not usually one to push personal matters into a conversation.”
